On Sunday Night I saw Graham Colton at World Cafe Live. The show started off a little quite, but he was able to get the room into it with his stories and a few covers sliced into his original songs. (Note: It was a cafe style show which usually leads to quite crowds and he didn’t have an opener.) This show was in support of his new cd “Pacific Coast Eyes”.
For how long I’ve known of Graham Colton, I’ve only seen him a few times. It was August of 2004 when I first saw him at the Festival Pier opening up for OAR and Howie Day. At this point, they were known as the Graham Colton Band. Most recently, I was able to catch a section of 1 set on The Rock Boat. For some reason he was only schedule for 2 sets, while everyone else got 3, which really bummed me out.
It was so great to see him perform solo. He played songs from his entire collection, including a b-side that he only released through his website. He mentioned that he’ll be back to Philly soon with a full band.
GC is another one of those artists where I don’t understand how he isn’t bigger. He’s opened for some major names including Kelly Clarkson, had his song featured on American Idol, performed on national television and was signed to a major label. For his most recent release, he decided to part ways with the label and complete it by his self. I this was a smart move as I wasn’t a huge fan of his previous release, 2007’s “Here Right Now”. I would think the reason for the lengthy time between albums is that he got married just over a year ago.
One of his songs, I believe “Love Comes Back Around”, will be featured in a movie to come out in 2012 regarding Autism. As a result, look out for him to work with organizations/charities in the coming year that deal with Autism.
