Kaki King - King Pizel

Song starts around 3:15.

I saw Kaki this past weekend at Xponential Music Festival and was really impressed. I don’t usually go for instrumental music, but watching her perform is something special.

Of Monsters and Men - Little Talks - TLA show 4.3.12

I saw Of Monsters and Men last night and they kicked ass. They sounded great, the crowd was all in and the energy was amazing. They lived up to the months of hype and waiting for them to cross the Atlantic. These guys are worth it. Do whatever you need to do and go see them. You don’t know the next time they’ll be in the states.

Ed Sheeran - KGSR’s SXSW broadcast

I stumbled upon this video on youtube and I wonder how I never heard of Ed before. His video for A Team has 29+ million views on youtube and I’ll definitely be checking out more of his stuff. He’s opening up for Snow Patrol and has a Philly date on 4/10 at the Electric Factory. Unfortunately, I’m not paying $40 for this show.

@headandtheheart - Rivers & Roads

I saw The Head and the Heart at Union Transfer on Saturday night. They put on a great show to a sold out audience. One of the highlights was when they sung “Rivers & Roads” during their encore. This is one of my favorite songs by them and the crowd was into it.

I’m in the process of moving my concert list to a google calendar, which will allow for easier updating. This is what I’ve got so far.

Parachute - What I know

Over the past 10 years that I’ve actively been involved in finding new music, I’ve overlooked/missed a lot of bands. Right now the one that stings the most is Parachute. I saw them play with Green River Ordinance a while back and although I enjoyed the show, they didn’t stick with me. In 2010, I saw them on Best Cruise Ever, and again I enjoyed them but I didn’t pay that much attention. I did buy their cd but I rarely listened to it.

In May of this year, they released a new album “The Way It Was”. At some point I bought the cd but I never opened it until recently. While hanging out in my favorite room on turntable.fm, the other DJs were playing a lot of Parachute including “What I Know” daily. This song instantly became one of my current favorites and reminded me to listen to their new cd. When playing the cd, I can’t listen to this song only once. I’m sure I’ll get sick of this song due to over listening, but for now, I’m enjoying it too much to care. I forget how sad the lyrics are as the chorus is so upbeat and makes me smile.

They will playing in Philadelphia on 10/10/11 at World Cafe Live playing with Kate Voegele.

Parachute Musical - Reflection

Last night I was able to see Parachute Musical at Bookspace in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia. A few of my music friends have been raving about them for a few months and I never latched  but thought their music was fun. Last night I latched. It’s a great feeling when seeing a band live is what makes it clicked. They’re piano based, fun, upbeat and put a smile on your face. The band is comprised of 4 guys and based out of Nashville with 3 of the guys hailing from the DC area. They’ve been constantly touring the states for the last couple and years building their following. I hope they swing by this area in the near future.

As expected, Bookspace was an interesting venue. It is literally a used book warehouse with a stage in the middle and creative art pieces around. (I actually ended up buying a book before I left.) It’s located in Fishtown, near Johnny Brendas and Manhattan Room, and has a high hipster population. I was surrounded by card carrying, vintage clothing wearing, pbr pounder drinking hipsters. I felt somewhat out of place in my jeans and woot t-shirt, but whatever, such is life. One really neat aspect, is that you can bring in your own beer as long as you’re respectful. I inquired about how they do their booking, and they said that usually promoters contact them and they book up quickly.

New Venue

I’ve obviously sucked at updating. Work has been busy and weekends have been packed. Soon I’ll post an update on the concerts that I’ve missed posting about. I have some artists that I haven’t discusses either.

Tonight I’m going to see Parachute Musical. I don’t know too much about them, except that 3 of my music loving friends rave about them. I’ve bought their cd, but haven’t listened to it much, again with work getting in the way. Besides seeing them for my first time tonight, I’ll be checking out a new venue. It’s called Bookspace and it’s a used book warehouse that they’ve turned into a art/cultural center as well. Although I’m not a huge reader, the concept is interesting and I’m excited to see the massiveness of the room.
